One area resident called this road among the most dangerous roadways in Orange County. To some, this description is a painfully clear reminder of several unforgettable tragedies.

In 2001, a big rig truck driver lost control of his vehicle, killing a local optometrist and injuring six other pedestrians near the intersection of Imperial Highway and Nohl Ranch Road. Two years later, two young men were killed nearby when their speeding car crossed the road's center divider, causing a head on collision with a car coming in the opposite direction.

There is no doubt that reducing the speed that motorists travel on these dangerous Orange County roads can save lives. Winding roads with few stop signs/stop lights to slow down traffic are an invitation for disaster.

Local homeowner associations have repeatedly raised the speeding issue with city officials. Regrettably, Anaheim's policies for the installation of stop signs and traffic signals are based on specific guidelines that have frustrated homeowner efforts. The guidelines are governed by traffic and pedestrian volumes, accident history, and any unusual conditions, which must be present at the intersection before traffic control devices may be installed. The city claims that simply improving the intersection visibility by prohibiting parking near the intersection is often more effective in reducing potential conflict points. They insist that an overuse of stop signs reduces their effectiveness. If they are installed where they are not justified, they are usually ignored by drivers who tend to speed up between stop signs instead of slowing down.

In a victory for child safety, Anaheim installed two new pedestrian traffic signals and four radar speed feedback signs on Sunkist Street between Ball Road and South Street for James Guinn and Benito Juarez Elementary Schools. Part of the Caltrans Safe Routes to School Program, the plan also included a traffic signal and two radar speed feedback signs on Riverdale Avenue between Finch Street and Lakeview Avenue for Riverdale Elementary School. The Safe Routes to School Program was created to improve conditions for children to safely walk and bicycle to school by decreasing traffic congestion around elementary and junior high schools.

Efforts like the Caltrans Safe Routes to School Program should be applauded when driving in California. Areas around schools must be as safe as we can make them.

Such grassroots actions create the need for special elections. Even if tacked on to another local election, it is costly. Some recall elections can cost as little as ,000 or as much as ,000. This is money that could be used directly for student curriculum.

There have been two unsuccessful local Michigan schools recalls in the Livonia and St. Clair Shores Lakeview school districts. Voters, who did not believe it worth the cost of a special election, sidelined the St. Clair recall. Current petition drives for a recall are raging in Garden City, Redford Union, and Van Buren school districts, as well as Port Huron.

Five Garden City school board members are being targeted for voting to eliminate 29.5 custodial positions and four food service workers. The local school district, which faced a .7 million deficit, will save .1 million over the next three years due to the board's decision.

Five Van Buren board members also are being targeted for recall. Residents believe they have mismanaged money and have twice floated failed proposals to pay for a new high school. Many people believe that something can be done with the current high school, rather than building a new one.

Brad Banasik, an attorney for the Michigan Association of School Boards, is astonished by the recall fever. He states it is an unprecedented number of recall attempts. Unfortunately, the Michigan schools funding crisis continues, which means more difficult decisions by local Michigan schools' officials, who must cut spending in order to meet more important budgetary needs. Yet, the community is basically saying, "Do something we do not like, and you will be recalled!"

It is frustrating for local Michigan schools' officials. Lisa Gubachy, a targeted board member in the Redford Union school district, summed it up best when she said, "Somebody was going to be unhappy no matter what decision the board made." She wonders why she keeps doing it, but then quickly reminds herself, it is "for the kids."

They spent their time fishing whilst their wives and children spent many a happy day along the magnificent beachfronts. Once the winter months set in the farmers would return to their homes, the fishermen however stayed. The fish was plentiful and the men had great successes in the ocean that lapped the shores of this small town.

By 1886 so many families had moved to Hermanuspietersfontein that a church and school were built. In 1902 after an irate postmasters complaint due to the towns' exceptionally long name, Hermanuspietersfontein became Hermanus. The town was so beautiful and filled with fresh sea air that it was not uncommon for doctors to recommend a trip to the seaside town for their patient's health.

The Sleepy Village Beside the Sea

The residents of Hermanus fought strongly for their home to remain a sleepy, quaint seaside village rather than succumb to the modernization that was creeping up all around them. One of the most significant contributors to this "village feeling" was William Hoy who was a frequent visitor to Hermanus. Hoy was the general manager of the railways and he ensured that the natural beauty of Hermanus would not be marred by the extension of the railway line into the village. Hundreds of years later Hermanus is the only railway station in the country with no trains. Hermanus is historically rich with many tales and interesting facts about the people who were responsible for making the town what it is today: from anti-railway activist William Hoy to the last indigenous beachcomber who lived in a cave in town. These people amongst many other contributed to both the development and the uncommercialised feel of Hermanus today.

Hermanus may be a quiet town but it is definitely not an uneventful one. There are a number of choices for beaches, from rock-protected coves to long expanses of sandy beach, perfect for safe swimming and strolling and the many tidal pools provide safe bathing and are perfect for children. Many renowned artists, sculptors, ceramicists, writers, jewellers, glass designers, quilters and photographers have settled here and brought international recognition to Hermanus. The museum enables visitors a fascinating glimpse into what the town was like in the past.

It is however the whale watching which draws so many visitors to this seaside paradise. Each year from July to December South Africa becomes home to thousands of Whales who leave the icy Antarctic to mate and birth their calves. The Western Cape is a hot spot for Whale watching in South Africa. The most common whales in this area are the majestic and once near extinct Southern Right Whales. Hermanus, which is located a mere 45 minute drive from Cape Town, is known as the "heart of the Whale Coast" and is recognised by World Wildlife Fund as the best land-based whale watching area in the world. 1. Cut the paper towel into rectangular strips about one inch wide and as tall as the glass container.

2. Take one of the markers and draw a horizontal line on the paper towel strip about one inch from the bottom.

3. Take a pencil or a pen. Poke a hole in the middle of the paper towel strip. Insert the pencil or pen through this hole so the strip hangs in the middle.

4. Rest the pencil or pen on the top edges of the glass container. The paper towel strip should be hanging into the glass container.

5. Take the pencil/pen off. Pour enough water into the glass container so when the strip is put back in, the water submerges the very bottom of the strip.

6. Put the strip back. Watch the water travel up the paper towel strip. Wait.

7. Repeat these steps for all the markers. See what colors each marker color is made out of!
