Mama and Maggie, must have, on one hand, been eager to see Dee leave the home habitation, at least for sometime. The aura in the story, of her boldness, ambitiousness, and zeal for sophistication and achievement making people uneasy while struck with awe, is very powerful. Dee was a young lady of beauty and sophisticated language; Mama tells Maggie that she knows of some childhood friends that Dee had. To Mama, such friends were mostly mysterious, grim-faced, and they often seemed to be in a Dee-induced trance...astounded by her knowledge, bombastic articulation, and beauty. Mama says, "She [Dee] had a few [friends]....Furtive boys... Nervous girls who never laughed. Impressed with her they worshipped the well-turned phrase, the cute shape, the scalding humor that erupted like bubbles in lye." The author, Alice, Walker does not mention the father or fathers of Dee and Maggie, although she is strong on mentioning her, "rough man-working hands." It is hence safe to presume that Mama is a single mother. Walker would also lead us to wonder about the relationship between the two sisters. Mama, in the piece of writing, concentrates on these two so much that it is likely that these were her only children. Dee apparently has a certain level of fondness for her less fortunate sister, but that seems to be overshadowed by her superiority complex, by her looking down upon Maggie because Maggie does not measure up to her aesthetic and intellectual attributes as well as world view. Dee is quite outward looking and ambitious.

Maggie is quite the opposite...burned, bruised, poor sighted, ungainly in appearance, abashed to the extent of often hiding in corners and wanting to bury her head in the sand. At some point in the text, Mama says of Maggie, "...she stops and tries to dig a well in the sand with her toe," giving us the impression that she sometimes wished that the world would swallow her. The fire that burned and handicapped Maggie, undoubtedly contributed to her stultified development and reservedness. But it is not clear whether the bullying attitude of her older sister Dee also contributed to this. We must remember that Dee did read to her sister and mother, indicative of her desire for these blood relatives to become of higher social level and esteem. Mama talks of Maggie, "Sometimes Maggie reads to me. She stumbles along good-naturedly but can't see well. She knows she is not bright." The author also makes us curious about the house fire that scarred Maggie. Mama emphasizes that Dee hated the house and seemed to rejoice in it's burning down. This would raise suspicion that Dee had something to do with the fire. But hardly anything about how the fire was started is mentioned.

As Mama and Maggie await Dee's arrival, Mama imagines what it would be like for her to be introduced alongside an imagined celebrity Dee in a Johnny Carson-like high audience show, a situation in which she would get to travel in a luxurious limousine. She knows it is mostly a dream, and she knows that there is some pretentiousness and vanity in such shows, much of it scripted. Mama opines that in the TV spotlight, it is people of such attributes as slender build ("hundred pounds lighter" than she is) and fair-skin ("like an uncooked barley pancake") that are preferred. She displays unappreciation for staring straight into a ("white") stranger's eyes, and she was raised to be wary of whites. She marvels that Dee can look anyone in the eye, without hesitation. It is indeed a new generation of blacks, and more are coming. Mama knows that TV leaves out a lot of reality. She is a good example of reality, and she is proud of her bucolic strength: "In real life I am a large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands....I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man." Unlike this era, such comparisons between masculine and feminine strength seem to have been quite common.

The visit, by Dee, to such close blood relatives that she had not seen for years, is notably short. Mama and an intimidated Maggie are astounded by the glamorous, brilliant, luxurious attire and jewelry on Dee. They are also awe-struck by the appearance of her, "short, stocky," companion from the other side of the car. Dee starts by uttering, "Wa-su-zo.Tean-o." Although, nothing further is mentioned about those words, some, with some knowledge of African languages would know that it stands for, "Wasuze otya nno?," 'How was your night,' in the Luganda east African language. The man starts with the Arabic-Islam greeting, "Asalamalakim," which Mama, at first, thinks is his name. Dee says she is no longer Dee, but now goes by the African names, "Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo." No explanation of these African names is offered, aside from Dee's dubious mentioning that they attach her to her indigenous African heritage, and displace names given to her by "oppressors," this in reference to her legacy of slavery. Walker does not tell us that Leewanika is probably a misspelling of the name of southern African King Lewanika who collaborated with the British. Neither does Walker elaborate further on the other names. "Ngero," in Luganda, means "stories" or "tales," "Wangero" meaning, "the one associated with stories/ tales." Kemanjo is probably a misspelling of some African name, or it is not a common African name. Mama gets to learn that "Asalamalakim" is Hakim-a-barber, probably a mishearing of the Arabic Islam names, "Hakim Akbar." All this is quite representative of the movements toward Africanism and black power in the 1960's and 1970's. Many of the quite formally educated, started adopting African and Islamic names, many times they did not know the meaning or histories of these names, and many became misspelled. It was an attempt at Africanization of identity, and embracing of Islam as an alternative religion to Christianity which was often perceived as the religion of oppressors. Indeed, many slavers and their ancestors have been Churchgoers. The paradox here is that the Dees and Hakims of this world are disdainful of their black-African heritage that is closest to them. Compared to the African culture of the Deep South, adopting African names is only a token of African culture. This ambivalence is becomes even more profound as Dee attempts to plunder his family of valuable crafts, such as quilts (put together over ancestral generations) and a churn handed down from previous ancestors. Dee likely wants to keep these valuables, as tokens of her heritage, as souvenirs, displayed in her home. Dee even belittles Maggie who owns some of them, saying she was only capable of putting them to, "Everyday use," and laughingly saying that, "Maggie's brain is like an elephant's" (also meaning that she has a good memory). Both Mama's and Maggie get disturbed and angered by Dee's demeanor of disrespect, insulting, selfishness, and aggression. Maggie still wants to give in to Dee, over the quilts that she really wants. An animated Mama, strongly declines and throws the quilts into Maggie's lap. Dee and Akbar leave shortly, soon after Dee implying to Mama that she did not understand the value of heritage and that Maggie should elevate herself out of the southern black rural environment. It is in this last incident that Mama gets to appreciate the strength and value of her younger daughter as against the seemingly foreign brash mannerisms of her older sister.

This story is quite representative of African-American social dynamics and dilemma. Of those who look down upon their past, as well as their less fortunate peers, while looking for fame and fortune in the capitalist world that involves aggressiveness, opportunism, and acquisition of wealth. But if possible, one should find a way to spend time living wherever one's second language is spoken. It's important to learn not just the language but also the culture and history of the country or countries. Culture cannot be divorced from the language and translators need to understand its influences and subtleties.

Recently, a first grader who attends the Illinois schools had his right to attend questioned. It seems that, although the boy's mother has custody, he still stays with his dad three or four nights a week due to the mom's night-shift nursing job.

Each parent lives in different school districts of Illinois; and both districts denied him access.

How pathetic. This boy is living through a difficult time in his life. His parents, no matter what the reasons behind their separation, seem to be doing all they can to make sure he is safe and growing up well. They are obviously concerned for the education he is getting and by having him stay with dad while mom is at work, instead of with a sitter or at daycare, demonstrates to me that they are trying their best.

To have the schools in Illinois get involved in this family's personal life is appalling. What business is it of theirs where the child spends most nights of the week? Kind of judgmental, don't ya think? The Illinois schools must have much better things to concern themselves with than where their six year old students are living. Like test scores. School safety. The No Child Left Behind Act.

Why is this even a school issue? Granted, geographics and boundaries are a school district's decision and kids do need to go to the schools in Illinois that are in their neighborhoods. Surely, exceptions can be made when a child's home life is in turmoil.

In times of distress, and divorce certainly qualifies, one thing that a child should be able to rely on is the stability that attending his or her Illinois schools can give. School is a constant, a child knows what to expect each day, and the normalcy is a comfort in the uncertain times of familial upheaval. Many times, parents even turn to the Illinois schools to help their children deal with the stress and emotion of such times. For Illinois schools to refuse education to a child because of a situation such as this is appalling.

On the other hand...

Of course, Illinois schools can't let everyone go to school wherever they want to. If a climate of school choice is available within an individual district, then so be it. However, most kids do have to attend school in their district, or they must obtain an "exemption". Surely this could have been done for this young student who only wants to get back to his teacher, his Illinois school and his friends.

The novel To Kill A Mockingbird revolves around a young girl named Jean Louise Finch who goes by the nicknamed "Scout". Scout experiences different events in her life that dramatically change her life. Scout and her brother Jem are being raised by their father, a lawyer named Atticus and a housekeeper named Calpumia in a small town in the south. At this point in time in the South racism and discriminations towards black was a big issue . The story begins when Scout is 6 years old, and her brother is about to enter the 5th grade. That summer Scout and her brother meet a young boy named Dill who comes from Mississippi to spend the summers there. They become fascinated with a man named "Boo" Radley, a man in his thirties who has not been seen outside of his home in years, mainly because of his suppressed upbringing. They have an impression of Mr. Radley as being this large ugly and evil man. Then comes the trial. Scout's father becomes a defense attorney for a black man, Tom Robinson, who is falsely accused of raping a white women. This has a big affect on Scout. During this trial she gets teased by friends because her father was helping this black man. Scout starts to see the racism that exist. During the trial Scout and her brother and close friend Dill witness the trial. Even though they are young they can see that Mr. Robinson is innocent. Even though Mr. Robinson's innocence was clear even in the eyes of kids, Mr. Robinson was still found guilty. Later in an attempt to escape, Mr. Robinson is shot dead. Scout is extremely disappointed at the verdict and even more at the death of Mr. Robinson and realizes the injustice that exist. Later in a cowardly attempt by the alleged rape victims father, tries to kill Scout and her brother in order to get even with her father for making him look back in court. This is when Mr.Radley makes an appearance again an stabs their attacker. Even though Mr. Radley kills a man he is not tried for murder because he was defending the Scout and her brother. Finally some justice. This gives Scout some hope that is a chance for improvement in this unjust world.

There are many different themes present in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The first theme which I will discuss is "Prejudice". The whole story revolved around the prejudice views of this Southern community. The whole reason why the trial was going on was because of people views towards blacks in the south. Since the alleged rape victim's father has such a prejudice view towards black, he is embarrassed that his daughter was actually flirting with a black man. To combat this he falsely accuses the innocent Mr. Robinson of rape. If it wasn't for the prejudice view which existed in the south the accusation would had never been brought against Mr. Robinson. These prejudice views in the south created a double standard of justice. With all the negative points that can be found in the story in respect to prejudice, there was a bright spot when it came to the prejudice issue. This "ray of light" came in the form of Scout's father Atticus. Atticus represented hope. Hope that good people still exist. Even in a society filled with hate. Atticus represented the hope that one day things can change

The "Prejudice" theme also ties in well with the title of the book "To Kill A Mocking Bird." In Chapter 10, Scout and Jem Finch get air rifles for Christmas. Scouts father tells her and her brother that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because mockingbirds are harmless creatures who do nothing but sing for our enjoyment. In the story To Kill a Mockingbird Mr. Robinson is clearly the "Mocking Bird". He is a good man who has never harmed anyone and is figuratively and literally shot by society because of prejudice. The jurors sentence him to death not because he did anything wrong but because of prejudice. He is then later shot for trying to escape this unjust ruling. Mr. Robinson just like a mockingbird is shot for no reason at all.

The second theme which I will discuss is "coming of age". The "Coming of age" theme basically entails a character who evolves to a new level of self awareness through his or her experiences in life. This is clearly the case with Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird. An example of Scout's "coming of age" can be seen when she meets her friend Dill. Dill comes from a broken home and lives somewhere beyond Alabama. Scout who comes from a good home is awaken to the different quality of life that exist and is able to come to a conclusion that life exist beyond the world she knows. Through these experiences she grows more tolerant of others, learning how to "climb into another person's skin and walk around in it." On her first day of school she finds that just like with Dill there are both social and poor classes in society, some are respectable and others not. She also learns that her father is an extra-ordinary man, fighting for a Negro's rights in court. During the trial of Tom Robinson Scout learns about equality and inequality and finally about racial prejudice. By the final chapters of the novel, Scout goes to another "coming of age experience." She learns that good people can still suffer injustice. She realizes this when she see's Tom Robinson suffer injustice even though they did nothing to deserve it. She discover that the courts does not always result in justice. In the end after all of Scout's experiences and discoveries we get the sense that she will not follow the prejudice views which her society upholds. In the end Scout had matured and grown more as a kid, than many adults will do in there lifetime.

The third and final theme which I will discuss is "Justice". In the story To Kill a Mockingbird I feel,the author, Ms. Lee portrays true justice as being best seen through the eyes of the innocent. In the story Scout and her brother, being the innocent,can clearly see the injustice being done to Mr. Robinson. In contrary to Scout and her brother other people in society more specifically the older people in the town, the people who have lived through different experiences, become blinded when it comes to true justice. Or maybe they are not blinded but just choose to ignore it. This is clearly seen when they sentence an innocent man to death. This ignorance of justice can be blamed on the prejudice views which are present and eventually instilled in society in the south. So I feel that Harper Lee is connecting justice with innocence to a certain extent. In my opinion Harper Lee portrays justice as being easily detected. The reason I say this is even the young justice. The problem is society can instill beliefs that can act as a veil and blind the people from justice. The only way to uncover this veil is through people like Atticus who can pass his morality and nobility to the young and the "blinded"

I would definitely recommend people to read the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I found it to be an interesting and powerful book. I feel the book does a great job in portraying the extreme prejudice that existed in the south at that time. I feel this book makes a powerful statement on how justice can be altered through racism. I also think that the themes found in the book are themes which can still be found in our current society and that makes it the more interesting. You can even make a case that prejudice still has an effect in our legal system today. So if you are looking for a powerful book of "coming of age" and the battle for justice I would highly recommend To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

The father discovers an elegant, antique box in the attic. He recognizes it as a Christmas box, a box designed to hold important Christmas treasures that the owner wishes to preserve. He notices some personal letters inside the box but tries his best not to intrude upon the privacy of the box.

The main action of the story takes place during the Christmas season. The woman challenges the father to give his viewpoint about the first and most important present of Christmas. The father has some ideas about how to respond to the question, but he realizes that his ideas are weak and that he seems to be missing something important.

By the end of the story the father has discovered the meaning of the contents of the Christmas box in the attic and the lesson that the woman teaches him about the first present of Christmas. These revelations were the most charming part of the story in my opinion. They gave a focus to some important lessons that need to be learned and relearned periodically throughout our lives. I was glad to have the opportunity to relearn them.

Another aspect of the story that captured my imagination involved the description and meaning of a statue of an angel. It was a very touching part of the story that I will long remember. I have since learned that replicas of the angel statue from "The Christmas Box" have been placed in over 25 cities throughout the nation, and that there are plans for many more.

Obviously, "The Christmas Box" is a story that has touched the lives of many people.

Chronicle makes a compelling case for what would happen if a group of teenage boys were to suddenly attain superhuman powers. They would not stare at each other in awe, as if they had just been touched by the hand of God. They would have fun with it, not just at their expense, but also at the expense of others. Initially, the boys in this film behave like the cast of Jackass, using their powers to pull dangerous stunts strictly for cheap thrills and a few laughs. They even pull pranks on unsuspecting people. One of them moves a parked car into a different parking space, leaving its owner confused. Another one sneaks into a toy store and makes a teddy bear float in front of a little girl, who can't be any older than six or seven. She understandably screams in terror. Once they get this out of their systems, I can see how they would then fly through the clouds and toss around a football, never once stopping to consider the idea that they might be in the flight path of a passenger jet.

But what if these powers found their way into the life of a bullied, abused, socially awkward teen? At a certain point, it would no longer be enough to just have fun with it. In all likelihood, you would be pushed into using it against other people, people who have hurt you, humiliated you, ignored you for no real reason other than being who you are. High school can be a lot like that. The sad thing is that so few are willing to listen if someone is having a problem. It's common to even excuse teenage cruelty and hatred as "kids being kids." Some will look at this movie and see a reworking of the superhero genre, specifically the opening chapter in which the hero rises and the villain is unwittingly created. One could certainly make a case for such an interpretation. For whatever it's worth, I see it more as a sad parable about how mistreatment can only be tolerated for so long before a breaking point is reached.

Taking place in suburban Seattle, the film is constructed, as many films are nowadays, as a found-footage mockumentary. Much of the action is shot by the story's tragic figure, a high school senior named Andrew (Dane DeHaan) who has decided to document his life on videotape. His mother, whom he cares for deeply, lies in her bedroom dying of cancer. His father, an unemployed firefighter (Michael Kelly), is a bitter alcoholic who not only physically abuses Andrew but also blames him for all the family's troubles. At school, he's regularly picked on by many of the students. He gets along with his cousin, Matt (Alex Russell), although there's always the sense that it hasn't always been this way. One night, while attending a rave at an abandoned barn, Andrew, Matt, and a new friend named Steve (Michael B. Jordan) discover a hole in the middle of the woods and decide to go in. A quick journey through a series of underground tunnels leads to the discovery of a cavern containing... something mysterious.

They quickly discover that their exposure to the object in the cave has given them super powers, including telekinesis and the ability to fly. It's all fun and games until Andrew nearly kills a driver by pushing his car off the road and into a lake. Matt tries to establish some ground rules, although Andrew is less than receptive. Andrew then uses his powers to make himself more popular in school. Of course it works, but you can see his frustration building. These students are not really his friends; had he not performed amazing tricks at the school talent show, he would remain the outcast he had always been. And it's not as if his home life has improved any. There are stages to Andrew's emotional breaking point, but it begins when his mother is in dire need of an unaffordable prescription medication. In his distress, he begins to see himself as an apex predator, believing himself to be stronger and therefore more worthy than all other human beings.

Andrew's footage, filmed on a camera that he can make float in the air, is occasionally intercut with footage shot by a girl named Casey (Ashley Hinshaw), an internet blogger. Her purpose is pretty much limited to being a plot device, as she provides the audience with a camera perspective different from Andrew's. There are hints that she and Matt have a complicated romantic history, although it's alluded to so infrequently and comes off as so contrived that it begs the question of why it was included in the first place.

And then there's the issue of the film's found-footage style, which was obviously chosen for its current marketability, especially in the horror genre. It works fairly well at first, but it gradually loses credibility until a climactic superhero-like duel on the streets of Seattle, at which point the illusion has shattered entirely. That's because we not only have Andrew's camera, but also surveillance equipment, police videos, civilian cell phones, and dozens of camcorders that just happen to be flying around Andrew and Matt as they hover near the Space Needle. I would think that, at that stage of the story, Andrew would long since have stopped documenting his life. The best bet would have been to shoot Chronicle with an ordinary omniscient camera. I don't think any of the film's more compelling aspects would have suffered as a result. And just think how nice it would have been to avoid the Queasy Cam.

Where to Catch Kokanee in Oregon

One of the most consistent kokanee waters in Oregon is Odell Lake near Willamette Pass, off Highway 58 roughly mid-way between Bend and Eugene. The kokanee here aren't big, but anglers with even modest experience stand a chance at reaching the 25-kokanee limit.

While kokanee numbers fluctuate from season to season in most locations, other Central Oregon lakes and reservoirs that often have excellent kokanee fishing include Wickiup Reservoir south of Bend and Suttle Lake near Sisters, which also have 25-kokanee limits. Elk Lake has the same bag but kokanee there tend to run small.

Also in Central Oregon, Lake Billy Chinook near Culver no longer has a 25-kokanee bag but still has excellent angling. Other favorite waters in this area are Paulina and East lakes in Newberry Crater, Crescent Lake near Odell Lake, Haystack Reservoir between Madras and Redmond and Lake Simtustus near Warm Springs.

In Western Oregon, a great kokanee fishing spot is Green Peter Reservoir near Sweet Home in the Cascade foothills, a short drive from Willamette Valley towns including Albany. Green Peter has a 25-kokanee limit and anglers who learn the reservoir can reach it when the bite is on.

Timothy Lake, a popular rainbow trout fishery southeast of Portland, also has a separate 25-kokanee limit and at time produces good catches. East of Salem, Detroit Reservoir anglers include kokanee and other landlocked salmon in their trout limit.

In Southeast Oregon, Lake of the Woods and Fourmile Lake, near each other in the southern Cascades between Klamath Falls and Medford, both have good kokanee populations and 25-fish limits in addition to reliable trout fisheries. Also in the region, Miller Lake near Chemult and Heart Lake between Klamath Falls and Lakeview offer kokanee fishing. Miller has a 25-kokanee bag but the kokanee tend to run small here.

How to Catch Kokanee

First off, perhaps the most useful tool an angler can have is a fish finder. This allows them to pinpoint kokanee schools, both their locations on the lake and their holding depth. Without a fish finder, the best advice is to inquire locally and watch for concentrations of boats.

The most popular way to catch kokanee is by trolling.

Trollers employ small, brightly colored lures to entice a strike. Various spoons, spinners and hootchies all work well. Stock a mix of lure types and colors, including fluorescent shades, as kokanee preferences can change by the hour.

When trolling, most anglers pull their lures behind dodgers or gang-style blade sets to help attract kokanee, a flashy, schooling fish. Also, it's fairly standard practice to put a piece of bait on the hook. Popular baits include white shoe-peg corn, maggots, shrimp, prepared baits or a small piece of nightcrawler. Some anglers also add prepared scents. Some anglers use rubber snubbers in an effort to blunt the force of the hookup because kokanee have soft mouths, but not all kokanee fishers believe this is productive.

Early in the season, kokanee often can be found near the surface. As warmer weather arrives, kokanee dive deep and trollers use lead weight or weighted lines to reach their quarry. Many serious anglers instead use downriggers, allowing them to more accurately target kokanee schools and then fight frisky fish on light tackle without as much weight.

Another very effective way to catch kokanee is by jigging for them with brightly colored metal lures. These jigs often are worked by anglers in a anchored boat, dropped vertically to the level of holding schools. Jig the lure upward and let it flutter among the fish. Kokanee usually grab it on the drop.

Jigs also can be cast toward shallow schools, which often are marked by jumping kokanee. Pitch the jig toward the fish and retrieve it in an erratic motion that includes pauses to let the jig flutter while it sinks.

Bait fishing can also be productive, using many of the same baits trollers use. Some anglers use a combination of baits, known locally by such names as the "Wickiup Sandwich."

Occasionally, anglers will have success fly fishing for kokanee, especially early in the year when these zooplankton eaters will turn a focus to aquatic insect larvae closer to shore.
