Do you know about - Ideas for a Math Fair

Elementary! Again, for I know. Ready to share new things that are useful. You and your friends.

Regardless of whether you call it a math fair, math carnival, school math night, or family math night, hosting one of these events at your school is a great way to get parents involved in their child's education. The basic idea of a math fair is to have parents come with their child and participate together in various math activities. The math fair gives teachers the opportunity to show parents what the students are learning.

What I said. It is not outcome that the true about Elementary. You check out this article for information about what you need to know is Elementary.

How is Ideas for a Math Fair

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from Elementary.

There are a few details that need to be taken care of before the actual math fair:

1. Prepare flyers or invitations for the students to take home.

2. Make sure you have at least one volunteer for each activity station, and try to have stations set up so more than one parent-student combination can participate at a time.

3. You may want to include handouts or worksheets that students can take home, even a tip sheet for parents to help their children learn the concepts presented at that station.

4. Decide whether you will have separate rooms or groups for different grade levels or whether you will set up one room with activities that can be done by everyone.

Activities
Math fair activities should get the students and parents involved, preferably working together, to solve math problems. Try to set up activities that will allow students to complete more than one while the fair is going on.

1. Scavenger hunt - A scavenger hunt can be an activity that goes on throughout the math fair, or it can be one station in the fair. Give students a list that involves measuring and solving problems. For example, students can find something that weighs 10 grams or measures 10 centimeters. Clues can involve math riddles, and the answer to the riddle is what the students are trying to find. Encourage parents and students to work as a team.

2. Probability games - This can be as simple as predicting heads or tails for coin flips. Variations could include the probability of finding matching socks in a suitcase or matching gloves in a box.

3. Bean bag toss - For a mathematical twist on the bean bag toss, have parents toss bean bags at cards on the floor. The cards have math problems on them, and the students have to answer the math problem to get prizes.

Shopping cart - Use plastic food items or other items for students to purchase from a store station. They are given a limit on how much they can spend, and must select items from the store without going over budget.
o For one variation, you can give each student an envelope of play money. They will need to count their money to determine their budget, then plan their purchases accordingly. o Another version of this game would be to use a restaurant menu and let the students figure out what to eat and drink based on their budgets. o For students that are working on percentages, you can even include sales tax on the purchases. Students will need to estimate how much they can spend before taxes to keep from going over their budget.
Encouraging Attendance

Try some of the following ideas to increase attendance:
1. Serve pizza. Not only will students want to come for the free pizza, but also you can use the pizza cutting and serving to discuss fractions. Participants don't receive a slice of pizza, but one-tenth or one-eight of a pizza. 2. Free homework passes. Give students who attend and participate a free homework pass. The pass is good for one homework free night. 3. Publicize the event in the school newsletter or on school bulletin boards. Even the local newspaper is a good place for placing information about the math fair. 4. Reward math students by allowing them to create a station for the math fair. The students will be excited about having their own station, so they will tell friends and family...repeatedly.

The most important thing to remember is to have fun. The math fair is not about right and wrong answers. The object is to get the parents involved with their children's schoolwork, to show parents what the children are doing, and to let the students have a good time while doing math.

These are investigative science projects, which involve a science experiment:

o Does the shape of ice affect melting time? Use the same amount of water, place into different shaped containers and freeze. Then see how much time each piece of ice takes to melt.

o Which toilet tissue is most biodegradable? Take samples of different types of toilet tissue, and soak them until they fall apart. Run the samples through a strainer, and see which sample leaves the most paper undissolved.

o Which citrus fruit has the most Vitamin C? Make an indicator solution with iodine and starch (it's EASY to do!), and test samples of citrus fruit or juice to see which one has the most vitamin C.

o Which brand cereal stays crunchy longest? Weigh different brands of the same cereal, soak in water, and then weigh again to see which one absorbed more water.

These are demonstration science projects - when your teacher wants you to demonstrate a scientific principle to the class.

o Demonstrate that yeast gives of gas. Place a yeast and sugar solution into a bottle, put a balloon on top, and watch the yeast give off gas so that the balloon blows up!

o Demonstrate how static electricity works. Make a ball of aluminum foil dance between your finger and a pie plate. Watch this one on www.youtube.com/watch

o Demonstrate how chemical reactions can be sped up. Put alka seltzer into a cup, and watch it fiz. Then do it again with crushed alka seltzer, another time with warm water, and yet another time with TWO alka seltzers.

We've done all of these science projects with our four boys, and they are fast, affordable, and easy to design on your own. While nick kids games and other online games are fun and entertaining for children it can also be an excellent way for kids to learn basic computer skills such as typing. Kids typing games are an excellent way to help kids become familiar with the keyboard and improve their typing skills at an early age.

What I said. It is not outcome that the true about Elementary. You look at this article for information on what you need to know is Elementary.

Kids typing games online are an excellent way for children to learn how to type and have fun at the same time. Kids as young as elementary age are using typing games and nick kids games to learn where the keys are, where there fingers should be positioned on the keyboard and the proper keystrokes to apply. If the online game is fun for the child he/she will have a good time while learning how to type.

Learning how to type can be a very frustrating experience for a child who is not familiar and not comfortable positioning his/her hands on the keyboard. Children often resort to using their pointer fingers applying the old "hunt and peck" style typing when they become frustrated. The sooner a child can become familiar with typing with the right fingers the more comfortable he or she will be using a computer or a word processor to do their reports, homework assignments and classroom related work in the future.

The ultimate goal is for children to learn how to type fluidly and without looking at their fingers while typing. Children who learn how to type properly and are comfortable with the keyboard will be able to focus more on what is being typed rather than typing itself.

Sir Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727) was an English scientist who made great contributions to physics, optics, math and astronomy. Among elementary and middle-school students, he is best known for his Three Laws of Motions and the Universal Law of Gravitation. Have you heard the story about an apple dropping on Newton's head? NASA: Newton's Three Laws of Motion

"The motion of an aircraft through the air can be explained and described by physical principals discovered over 300 years ago by Sir Isaac Newton." This illustrated, hyperlinked lesson created by NASA introduces Newton's Laws of Motion and how they apply to aviation. The grade-level buttons (labeled 6-8, 9-12, and 11-12) link to related worksheets, activities, and quizzes. Stay on the Newton Guided Tour by navigating with the Next and Previous buttons, or jump to a new section by visiting the colored buttons (such as Kite Index or Model Rocket Index.)

The Physics Classroom: Newton's Laws of Motion

The Physics Classroom is an illustrated, animated tutorial for high-school students written by high-school science teacher Tom Henderson. These four lessons explain Newton's Laws of Motion with multimedia demonstrations and quizzes. My favorite clicks are the interactive activities listed in the Shockwave Physics Studio and the animations found in Multimedia.

PBS: Newton's Dark Secrets

"He was the greatest scientist of his day, perhaps of all time. But while Isaac Newton was busy discovering the universal law of gravitation, he was also searching out hidden meanings in the Bible and pursuing the covert art of alchemy. In this program, NOVA explores the strange and complex mind of Isaac Newton." Although few classrooms probably explore this side of Newton's fascinating character, I include it for variety. Best clicks are His Legacy, and Einstein on Newton.
